About LrGeniusAI
Free, open-source AI for every Lightroom Classic photographer.
What is LrGeniusAI?
LrGeniusAI is a plugin for Adobe Lightroom Classic that brings modern AI capabilities directly into your photo management workflow — without requiring a subscription, a cloud account, or any photos leaving your computer. It covers AI keywording, natural-language photo search, AI-assisted culling, face recognition, and experimental editing recipes, all from inside Lightroom.
The plugin is free and open-source under the AGPL-3.0 license. Source code lives on GitHub.
Why free and open-source?
The tools photographers need to organize and find their work should not cost a monthly subscription on top of an already expensive software stack. AI models powerful enough to describe and search photos now run on consumer hardware — there is no technical reason these features should require a cloud subscription.
By releasing LrGeniusAI under the AGPL-3.0 license, the project commits to staying free and open. Anyone can inspect the code, adapt it, or contribute improvements. Derivative works must also remain open under the same terms — ensuring that the community's contributions stay in the commons.
Local AI first
LrGeniusAI is designed to run your photos entirely on your own hardware via Ollama or LM Studio. When running locally, no image data ever leaves your computer — no telemetry, no training on your photos, no third-party access. This matters for photographers working with unpublished client work, sensitive subjects, or simply anyone who values owning their data.
Cloud providers (ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Google Vertex AI) are also supported for those who want maximum model quality or don't have suitable hardware for local inference. The choice is always yours.
Status and roadmap
LrGeniusAI is under active development. Core features — AI keywording, semantic search, and face recognition — are stable and in daily use by photographers. AI culling and editing recipes are in beta and still maturing.
Installers are currently not code-signed, which may trigger security warnings on macOS and Windows. This is a known limitation that will be addressed as the project matures. See the Getting Started guide for current installation instructions and the FAQ for common questions.
How to contribute
Contributions of all kinds are welcome — bug reports, feature requests, documentation improvements, or code. The project is hosted on GitHub:
